Achieving the best for Welsh Science

Over the past five years the Sêr Cymru National Research Network (NRN) in Advanced Engineering and Materials (AEM) has provided a unique platform with the aim of enhancing the face of Welsh science both nationally and internationally.
Set up as part of the Welsh Government's 'Science for Wales' initiative and with 62 projects spanning four themes of engineering, we’ve funded innovative research across Wales involving three leading universities namely, Swansea, Cardiff and Bangor as well as working with industrial lead TWI Ltd. an independent research and technology organisation with expertise in materials, joining and engineering processes.
The NRN has published 208 papers of which over 50 have featured within high impact journals such as Nature, Journal of Physics, Physical Review Letters, Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering as well as having 265 abstracts accepted for national and international conferences with active collaboration between 125 companies including Rolls-Royce, TATA Steel, Huawei, BT, BP and the NHS amongst others.
Having funded 40 PhDs we have provided the platform to ensure the future of engineering within Wales meets its full potential hosting an annual PhD conference with sister networks NRN Life Sciences and NRN Low Carbon, Energy and Environment as well as number of training courses working with the likes of Science Made Simple as well as displaying at the National Eisteddfod showcasing to over 200,000 people over seven days.
The NRN AEM also established itself in a first of its kind event for Wales, namely, Engineering Wales 2017 and 2018. This event brought together over 400 individuals from both industry and academia with talks from leading car manufacturer Aston Martin, Qioptiq, BT, KTN, Innovate UK as well as the Royal Academy of Engineering to name a few.
